Scanning a QR code takes just a few seconds using your smartphone camera. Whether you have an iPhone, Android phone, or tablet, this guide shows you exactly how to scan QR codes - no extra app needed in most cases.

1. Scan on iPhone (iOS)

Open the Camera app and point it at the QR code. A notification banner appears at the top of the screen with the link. Tap the banner to open it. This works on iOS 11 and newer. If it does not work, go to Settings > Camera and enable "Scan QR Codes".

2. Scan on Android

Open the Camera app and point it at the QR code. Most modern Android phones (Android 9+) detect QR codes automatically and show a link overlay. Tap the link to open it. If your camera does not detect QR codes, open Google Lens from the camera or download it from the Play Store.

3. Scan Using Google Lens

Open Google Lens (available in the Google app, Google Photos, or as a standalone app). Point your camera at the QR code. Google Lens will detect and decode it, showing you the content or link. This works on both Android and iPhone.

4. Scan from a Screenshot or Image

Already have a QR code saved as an image? Open Google Lens or your phone's gallery app. Select the image with the QR code. The scanner detects and reads the code from the photo. On iPhone, you can also long-press a QR code image in Safari or Photos.

5. Troubleshooting Scan Issues

If a QR code will not scan, try these fixes: Clean your camera lens for a clear image. Move closer or further - the ideal distance is 15 - 30 cm for small codes. Ensure there is enough lighting - low light can prevent detection. Check that the QR code has good contrast between foreground and background.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a special app to scan QR codes?

No. Modern iPhones (iOS 11+) and Android phones (Android 9+) scan QR codes directly with the built-in camera app. Only older phones may need a third-party scanner app.

Is it safe to scan QR codes?

Generally yes, but always check the URL before tapping. Avoid scanning QR codes from unknown sources that could lead to phishing sites. Your phone shows the URL before you open it - verify it looks legitimate.

Can I scan a QR code from my phone screen?

Yes. Use Google Lens to scan a QR code from a screenshot or saved image. On iPhone, you can also long-press a QR code image in Photos or Safari to detect the link.
